What we do

QBWA is a voluntary association producing Braille and Moon books for children and adults, school and university students. Our website is the place to find out more about the range of services and resources available, as well as the latest Braille and Moon library catalogues.

Our mission

To provide Braille and Moon tuition and reading material to empower people who are blind or who have low vision to live with dignity and independence.

News and events

Please note that the office is closed for the Summer break until 29 January, 2010. Telephone messages will be checked periodically and responded to when possible.

At the invitation of the Governor of Queensland, Her Excellency Ms. Penelope Wensley AO, QBWA set up a display at the Open Day at Government House in June. This was a very good opportunity for Braille House to share our work with the general public. This photograph, taken on that occasion, is of the Governor with Leona Kitson (Education and Special Requests section) and Linda Triasmono (Magazine section).

The Catalogues dated 7 December, 2009, are available for download from our Library page. Here are just a few examples of 2009 additions which appear in the updated catalogues:

2010 braille and tactile calendars on the theme of "Aboriginal legends" and featuring some fascinating pictures, are available for purchase from November until March. Please go to the Magazines & calendars page for further details.

The next Annual General Meeting of the QBWA will be held on Wednesday, 23 June, 2010.

The annual Braille Reading and Writing Competition, on the theme of Louis Braille, was held on Friday 11 September 2009 and proved to be another very enjoyable and positive way to help celebrate the bicentenary of the birth of Louis Braille. Watch this space for details of the 2010 competition.

"Look Around", a weekly news and information program on Radio 4RPH, includes QBWA's monthly feature and is recommended to South-East Queensland residents. Tune in to 1296 on the AM band for this 15 minute broadcast on the first Monday of each month at 1:30pm (repeated on the following Wednesday at 7:00am).
